Exercising after Spine Fusion SurgeryOne of the reasons patients undergo spine fusion surgery is to restore their mobility, posture, and spinal strength. The way to revert back to an active lifestyle is by exercising after spine fusion surgery. Your doctor will advise activity that is safest for you and when to begin reintroducing exercise into your recovery program. The most recommended post spine fusion exercises include:

  • Swimming
  • Stationary Bicycle
  • Walking
  • Restorative Yoga
  • Deep breathing
  • Physical Therapy

Some recommended exercises depend on the location of your surgery. For upper back fusion, it may be safer to reintroduce lower-body and leg exercises first such as stationary bicycle riding or walking. Swimming, water rehab, and focused breathing are safe for all surgery sites once skin is healed and may be preferred as a starting point for lumbar fusion patients.

Along with the list of recommended activities, there are many forms of exercise which simply will not be safe immediately following spine fusion surgery such as:

  • Dancing
  • Climbing
  • Contact Sports
  • Heavy Lifting
  • Running
  • Gymnastics
  • Horseback riding
  • Shooting

Always consult with your doctor to know if an activity is safe following your surgery, or how soon to reintroduce it. In most cases, all former activities can be restored following a successful fusion.
